If you are like everyone else on planet Earth you sweat – especially in your pits. Sweat can lead to BO, which nobody wants – so we all reach for deodorant/antiperspirant to combat the stench. Unfortunately that tube of deodorant you are reaching for is most likely toxic to your health!
We all wear deodorant every day and apply it directly to our skin – our bodies largest organ, so it’s important to know exactly what you are putting on your pits. Before I made the switch to a safer deodorant, I was a fan of Secret Clinical Strength – I sweat a lot, and this one did a great job at controlling it. Let’s take a look at the ingredients in this deodorant/antiperspirant:
Aluminum Zirconium Tetrachlorohydrex Gly, Cyclopentasiloxane, Stearyl Alcohol, C12-15 Alkyl Benzoate, Ppg-14 Butyl Ether, Cyclodextrin, Phenyl Trimethicone, Petrolatum, Hydrogenated Castor Oil, Talc, C20-40 Pareth-10, Fragrance/parfum, Paraffin, Behenyl Alcohol, Tocopheryl Acetate, Panthenyl Triacetate, Acetyl Glucosamine.
I have linked the most harmful chemicals so you can continue to read and educate yourself on their toxicity. These ingredients are awful – unless you are a chemist you have no idea what these are and here we are just rolling them on our underarms! No only are these ingredients proven to be endocrine disruptors, but they are also linked to CANCER!
Avoid Aluminum in your deodorant – PERIOD.
While all of these ingredients are toxic, the one I want to focus on today is Aluminum. Aluminum is present in antiperspirants to help prevent you from sweating by blocking your sweat glands. When you roll aluminum on your underarms where do you think it goes? Overtime, it builds up in your breast tissue and exerts an estrogen-like effect that directly promotes the growth and spread of breast cancer cells.
News flash – sweating is actually good for you! Sweating is one of your bodies detox pathways – if we are constantly blocking this pathway with antiperspirants the toxins have no where to go. If the toxins have no where to go they stay in your body – our underarms are right next to breast tissue, and lymph nodes – not a great place for toxins to hang out. You want to RELEASE those toxins – and even thought it’s not always pleasant sweat is one of the ways our body does that.
Detoxing your pits
Years ago when I learned about the toxins in antiperspirants I immediately switched to a natural brand. Let’s just say it was not a pleasant experience. I am pretty sure I smelled worse as I moved from my toxic brand to a natural deodorant for quite a few weeks. I was worried I was doomed to smell everyday unless I continued to put toxic chemicals under my arms and that was just not an option for me. What I have learned since then, is that you actually need to allow your pits to detox from the years of using antiperspirants. Your armpits have never been allowed to breath and release toxins. Here is the detox I used that I found worked really well! Another thing I did that was a total game changer was to drink liquid chlorophyll. Chlorophyll is a natural internal deodorizer . I purchased unflavored liquid chlorophyll from Amazon and used it a few different ways –
- I would add a few tablespoons to my morning green smoothie which was great because you can’t even taste it! Honestly my kids would drink it, and I still add it to smoothies on a regular basis.
- I would also make a drink with – 1 Tbs liquid chlorophyll, 1 C unsweetened 100% tart cherry juice or cranberry juice, juice from half a lemon, few drops of liquid Stevia.
This is such a refreshing drink – if you drink the chlorophyll plain it does literally taste like grass, but I enjoy that earthy flavor.
Once those pits are detoxed you are as good as gold. A few things I noticed after detoxing my underarms – I no longer smelled!! Even if I did sweat the smell was minimal – and this was without any deodorant at all. Another very happy side effect was that my underarms were smooth like butter. I was working at the time where I would often travel and meet with clients – I was still worried sometimes that I might smell so I would go back to using my toxic deodorant for a few days. It never failed that I would always get a rash, my underarm skin would look a little discolored, and I would get red bumps from shaving. Once I detoxed my pits again, they were once again smooth as butter.
Natural Deodorant that REALLY works!
I have tried many brands over the years, some work better than others – but I will admit I had yet to find one that I really, truly loved. Enter Schmidt’s! I have been using this brand for about a year now and I can honestly say I am in LOVE! This brand has everything I was looking for – safe clean ingredients, smells amazing, and protects against odor and wetness. My husband also uses this brand and has been so impressed by it. He meets with clients all day long, and never worries about odor or wetness. Let’s take a look at the ingredients in my favorite scent Ylang Ylang and Calendula:
Maranta arundinacea (arrowroot) powder, Cocos Nucifera (coconut) Oil, Euphorbia Cerifera (candelilla) Wax, Butyrospermum parkii (shea butter), Sodium bicarbonate (baking soda), Caprylic/Capric Triglyceride (fractionated coconut oil), Simmondsia Chinensis (Jojoba) Seed Oil, Cananga Odorata Flower Oil, Calendula Officinalis (Calendula) Oil, Tocopherol (vitamin E; sunflower-derived)
I don’t know about you, but I definitely don’t need a chemistry degree to understand these ingredients. They have scents that include baking soda which is what I use, and some sensitive skin versions without baking soda. Some people find they are sensitive to baking soda and their underarms are irritated by it . My husband is actually one of those people, so he uses the sensitive skin tea tree scent.
I love this brand because not only does it help with odor protection, it also does a great job of protecting against wetness. This is not an antiperspirant so don’t expect to never have any wetness in your underarms (You don’t want to anyway), but you also don’t pit out – which is the most important!
So moral of the armpit story is this: ditch the toxic chemical crap storm antiperspirants for an all natural deodorant that really works. Give your pits some time to adjust and detox for the best results. Don’t give up if the first brand you try doesn’t work for you. I tried several brands before I found one that worked for me.
In terms of switching personal hygiene products out for less toxic versions I would put deodorant at the very top of that list. I encourage you to make the switch and give it a try!
