Hi – I’m Naomi. A 36 year old mom to 3 babies. I have 2 handsome boys ages 7 and 9, and a sweet baby girl age 1. I am also wife to one lucky husband…wait I mean I’m the lucky wife with an amazing husband! It’s the truth though, he’s the cream of the crop and puts up with me everyday – so I guess I’ll keep him. I love to read, cook (Even though I’m a messy one it soothes the soul), sometimes bake, spend time with my people, prefer salt over sugar, enjoy sarcasm more than most, love a good concert, am a bit crass, and sometimes have the mouth of a sailor – please don’t tell my mom 8O. I’m a Seattle native, but currently blog from our new home in St. Louis – it’s quite the change going from the PNW to the Midwest, but so far we love it!
I actually find it very fitting that I am from Seattle, because I finally feel like I am embracing my roots. I have officially become a tree hugging, Birkenstock wearing, natural health loving, crunchy granola mom, who takes recycling and composting very seriously. I still will not wear socks with those Birkenstock’s, but I am not afraid to admit I finally understand why people do! They are SO comfy and easy to slip on, so you want to wear them everywhere, and some days gosh dang it your toes are bit chilly and it’s tempting to reach for that pair of warm woolly socks. I swore I would never do a lot of things – never say never!
I started on the path to my new crunchy granola life after a series of health problems left me almost completely debilitated with a 1 month old, 2 year old, and husband to care for. You can read this post to understand more about why I began this new quest in life. The kicker here is that my health problems were completely created, and resolved through food. Doctors could not fix me, and I saw many of them. I had dozens of tests run, and they found nothing wrong – yet I was still sick. Once I did the research, put 2 + 2 together myself, and realized what I needed to do to regain my health – I never looked back. I have only gone forward with my motto – “Once you know better, you do better.” That has been a constant in my life, the more I read, search, and study the more I learn about our food and where it comes from which leads thinking about EVERYTHING we put IN and ON our bodies. I thought – if I would not put that chemical in my mouth, why would I put it on my skin or my children’s skin, our largest organ? That pretty much sums me up – a mother, wanting better for herself, family, friends, and every one she meets. I want to share this message, and it’s importance so everyone, not just me, can make informed decisions for their own families. I want to know EXACTLY what I am feeding my family, and EXACTLY what products I am putting in/on my kids bodies. That is MY right. Once I have all of the information then that gives me the ability to make INFORMED decisions for my own personal family which is so empowering as a mother.
I started this blog as a way to share this message with all who will listen – who knows if anyone will! I don’t claim to know everything, and I am not perfect. We do enjoy going out to eat, don’t eat organic 100% of the time, nor do we cook perfectly all of the time. No one can live up to those expectations, it’s too stressful, and life is too busy. But I do try. I love to cook, try new real food recipes, make my own cleaning solutions, use holistic health remedies for minor illnesses, and am always on the search for safer hygiene and beauty products. Even if you are not a cook, don’t know your way around a kitchen, or if you’ve never even considered looking at the labels on your food or health products – you’ve come to the right place. We can learn together, one foot in front of the other. I most look forward meeting people who, just like me, are trying to do their best for their families and who love to learn new information, tips, and tricks along the way.
Thanks for checking me out, and welcome to Girl Meets Granola!
